Spring Short Story Workshop

Spring Workshop: Writing Short Stories

Tuesdays in Amsterdam - April 15 to May 20, 19:00-21:00

Short stories are experiments. This generative creative writing workshop aims to deepen your relationship with the writing process and what it can offer: surprise, possibility, curiosity, a space to experiment. What is the process by which a short story is created, made, animated? What instincts, habits, and preoccupations energize our writing lives—and how can we become more at home in them? We’ll look at different ways of beginning a short story and consider how, from a few first sentences, a writer finds the way forward. What’s alive, what’s evolving, and how can we use that to keep going—to sustain a story, find its full scope, and see it through to an ending? We’ll write often, sustain some of our writing into longer pieces, and work to understand how we did this so we can keep doing it in our ongoing writing lives. Fiction readings will be paired with essays and interviews by the authors: we’ll aim to deepen our relationships to our own writing processes by engaging with other writers’ efforts to do the same.

This class is recommended for writers who have previously taken some creative writing classes (in any genre). It’s also suitable if you have a depth of experience in another discipline (theater, dance, improv, visual art, etc) and a curiosity to try something new. There will be in-class writing as well as some at-home reading and writing. Please note that the class is designed around creating new work, rather than workshopping any of your existing writing projects.

Cost: 300 euros. Early bird price before March 20 is 250 euros. Location TBA, likely in Amsterdam Oost. To sign up, fill out the form below, or for any questions about the workshop, please email me.
